    Abscess treatment

An abscess is a localized collection of pus (dead white blood cells) that has been walled off from the rest of the body. Abscesses are normally found on the skin and are commonly seen as a result of cat fights or foreign material (such as splinters or cheat grass). Abscesses may be painful and may be associated with fever or lethargy. Abscesses require medical and most of the time surgical management. It is important to explore the inside of the abscess to look for foreign material and to determine if a drain needs to be placed. Removing all of the pus and flushing the abscess with an antibacterial solution is also an important part of treatment. Sedation or anesthesia may be required to treat your pet, as well as antibiotic therapy.
