    Anal gland expression

Anal glands are paired sent glands located inside the rectum of both dogs and cats. Anal glands are filled with a foul-smelling substance (typically a thick or viscous substance) which usually gets expressed when the animal defecates. Sometimes pets (mainly dogs) are not able to fully express anal glands on their own and manual assistance is required. The most accurate way to express anal glands is internally (inside the rectum!). It is important to evaluate the discharge for any blood or abnormalities. Some dogs need their anal glands expressed regularly. You may notice your dog “scooting” when the anal glands are getting full!
